- a piece of dulcimer history
Clifford Glenn (1935–2015) was a highly revered traditional luthier and musician from Sugar Grove, Watauga County, North Carolina. Alongside his father, Leonard Glenn, Clifford was a pivotal “transitional” maker who bridged the gap between old-time Appalachian artisans and the 1960s folk music revival. He dedicated over five decades to handcrafting mountain dulcimers and fretless mountain banjos using the exact, un-modernized methods passed down through his family.
Clifford Glenn rejected modern manufacturing shortcuts and built entirely by hand. His instruments are highly prized by collectors and musicians for their exceptional structural beauty and traditional acoustic properties. Clifford Glenn’s legacy lives on in museums like the Smithsonian Institution. He remained steadfast in his philosophy that instruments were functional art.
